The Denver Nuggets played well in their back-to-back-to-back stretch.

The Denver Nuggets played well in their back-to-back-to-back stretch. The
Sacramento Kings are hoping things start looking up after a rough start to
theirs.

The Nuggets will try to keep their perfect home record intact when they face
the Kings on Wednesday night.

Denver (4-2) opened a stretch of three games in three nights with a 92-89
road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday, but bounced back with a 99-90
win over the Lakers the following night before recording a 91-86 victory over
Milwaukee on Monday.

The Nuggets, playing without starting forward Nene (bruised heel), showed
signs of fatigue, shooting 39.8 percent while committing 16 turnovers, but
outscored the Bucks 23-12 in the fourth quarter.

Danilo Gallinari finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Ty Lawson had
16 points and six assists.

“They didn’t look like they had three games in three nights,” Milwaukee’s
Stephen Jackson said. “That says a lot about how good of shape they’re in, and
they didn’t have Nene, so you’ve got to credit them for that.”

The win was Denver’s third in as many home games this season. They shut down
the Bucks in the fourth quarter after holding the Lakers to 19 points in the
final period on Sunday. Those teams shot a combined 40.9 percent and were 9 of
42 (21.4 percent) from 3-point range.

“In the fourth quarter it’s very easy to find extra energy,” Gallinari said
of feeding off the crowd. “You have a tight game, you want to win, especially at
home.”

Gallinari has elevated his play of late, collecting 41 points, 14 rebounds
and five steals in the last two games. He had 34 points and 14 boards in his
three previous contests.

The Nuggets may need another big game from him if Nene is sidelined again
Wednesday, although Al Harrington has been playing effectively off the bench. He
had 17 points and eight boards Monday and is averaging 15.7 points and 6.5
rebounds.

Like Denver, Sacramento (2-4) began its back-to-back-to-back series with a
113-96 loss to Memphis on Tuesday, but it could have a tougher time bouncing
back.

The Kings were outscored 31-17 in the first quarter, shooting 5 of 20.
Rookie Jimmer Fredette scored a season-high 17 points, shooting 4 of 6 from
3-point range, while J.J. Hickson contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds.

DeMarcus Cousins came off the bench and had four points and eight rebounds
in 22 minutes. Cousins was told on Sunday to stay away from the team by coach
Paul Westphal after demanding a trade.

“I wouldn’t say it’s resolved,” Westphal said before the game. “We will see
how it plays out. I think DeMarcus has to continue to show maturity and a desire
to go the same direction as his teammates. We’re all hoping that happens.”

Cousins is third on the team with 11.2 points per game and adds 10.6
rebounds.

Sacramento will close this three-game stretch Thursday against Milwaukee.
The Kings starters should be rested after Westphal pulled most of them early
Tuesday. No starter played more than 27 minutes.

The Kings have lost four of five overall against the Nuggets and five
straight in Denver since a 118-115 win on April 5, 2008.

Danilo Gallinari scored a season-high 21 points, including a pair of free throws in the final seconds, and the Nuggets beat the Milwaukee Bucks 91-86 on Monday night to go 2-1 over the last three nights.

”The Bucks having two days off and us playing three in a row, we knew they had a little bit of an advantage, and they like to run like us,” said Al Harrington, who had 17 points for the Nuggets. ”But we always feel playing in Denver with the altitude, if we keep running in the fourth quarter we’ll be in a good position. At the end of the day they got tired.”

Ty Lawson chipped in with 16 points for the Nuggets, who were without Nene because of a bruised left heel. The Brazilian big man’s status is day-to-day.

Stephen Jackson had 17 points and Carlos Delfino added 14 for the Bucks, who were denied in a bid for a third consecutive win – which would have matched their best streak from last season.

The Bucks also were without Mike Dunleavy, who did not make the trip because of an undisclosed illness.

”When you play three games in three nights, the third one is very tough, especially when you play back-to-back (to start the set) with the Lakers,” Gallinari said.

Gallinari said when the going got tough, the Nuggets fed off the crowd.

”In the fourth quarter it’s very easy to find extra energy,” he said. ”You have a tight game, you want to win, especially at home.”

Jackson said the Nuggets didn’t appear fazed by the string of games.

”They didn’t look like they had three games in three nights,” Jackson said. ”That says a lot about how good of shape they’re in, and they didn’t have Nene, so you’ve got to credit them for that.”

Delfino’s 3-pointer gave the Bucks a 74-68 lead heading into the fourth quarter and Andrew Bogut’s 10-foot hook shot put Milwaukee in front 81-76 with 8:31 left to play.

Gallinari, who also had 10 rebounds, then got the Nuggets going. He drove in for a layup and tipped in a shot as part of a 10-0 run that Harrington finished with successive dunks as Denver went in front 86-81 with 4:01 remaining.

Jackson made a 20-foot jumper to pull Milwaukee to 87-86 with 1:55 remaining. Both sides missed jump shots before Lawson shook loose on a fast break and put in a layup with 10.9 seconds left for a three-point Nuggets’ lead.

Brandon Jennings, who had 12 points, missed a 3-point attempt from the top of the key with about 7 seconds to go. The rebound went to Gallinari, who was immediately fouled. He made both free throws with 5.3 seconds remaining to secure the win.

”We didn’t play very well. We kind of threw the ball all over the place,” said Bucks coach Scott Skiles. We gave ourselves a chance but we missed layups and we missed open shots.”

Milwaukee took a 44-37 lead after a basket by Luc Mbah a Moute. Denver came back to score 11 of the next 15 points, including tip-in by Gallinari as time expired to even the score at 48-all at halftime.

Notes: The Bucks failed to score at least 50 points in the first half for the first time in four games this season. … The Nuggets second back-to-back-to-back set is in the first week of February. … Gallinari’s previous season high was 20 points, scored the night before in a win over the Los Angeles Lakers. … Jennings scored 20 or more points in each of his first three games before ending the streak with his 12-point outing against the Nuggets. … Denver has won eight of its last 10 meetings with the Bucks at the Pepsi Center.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Danilo Gallinari scored 20 points, Ty Lawson had 17 points and
10 assists and the Denver Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 99-90
on Sunday night.

Nene had 13 points for the Nuggets, who avenged a three-point
loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles less than 24 hours earlier.

Pau Gasol had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Andrew Bynum had 18
points and 16 rebounds for the Lakers. Kobe Bryant scored 16 points
on 6-of-28 shooting.

After a seesaw battle for most of the final period, the Nuggets
scored the final 11 points to pull out the win.

Gallinari scored two fast-break layups to give Denver a
two-point lead with 2:07 left. After Gasol missed a short
turnaround jumper, Lawson’s layup gave the Nuggets a 94-90 lead
with 1:20 left.

Bryant missed a 3-pointer from the top of the circle and
Harrington hit a 12-foot jumper to make it 96-90 with 49 seconds
left.

The Lakers took a 90-88 lead on Bryant’s layup with 2:47 left
and didn’t score again.

Trailing by 11 at halftime, the Lakers came out strong in the
third quarter. Bynum scored seven points in the first four minutes,
including a three-point play that tied it at 50-all.

Denver didn’t hit its first field goal of the second half until
Lawson’s drive gave the Nuggets the lead back with 7:03 left.
Gallinari followed with Denver’s first 3-pointer of the game to
make it 55-50.

Denver’s lead grew to nine late in the third before the Lakers
made another run to pull to 72-71 heading into the fourth.

Bryant missed his first five shots and committed two offensive
fouls before sitting in the final minute of the first quarter. He
returned midway through the second, hit a 3-pointer but missed his
next four.

The Lakers team didn’t fare any better. Los Angeles missed its
last 11 shots of the first half and shot just 32 percent at the
break.

The Nuggets struggled from the field, too, missing all nine of
their 3-point shots before the break, but they surged at the end of
the second quarter. Leading 39-36, Al Harrington hit four free
throws and had a nice interior pass to set up a dunk by Chris
Andersen that helped Denver take a 47-36 lead at halftime.

NOTES: Denver was 2 for 18 from 3-point range. … The Lakers
have played six games in the first eight days of the season,
including three in three nights to open the schedule. … Lawson
has scored in double figures in four of Denver’s first five games.
… Denver came into Sunday second in scoring in the NBA but 24th
in 3-point shooting.

(Sports Network) – The scene shifts from Hollywood to the Rockies as the
Denver Nuggets and Los Angeles Lakers finish up a home-and-home set on New
Year’s Day at Pepsi Center.

The Lakers won the front end of the set in Staples Center when Andrew Bynum
returned from a four-game suspension to score 29 points, grab 13 rebounds and
hit the eventual game-winning shot in LA’s narrow 92-89 win over the Nuggets
on New Year’s Eve.

Kobe Bryant, who is four points shy of 28,000 for his career, had 17 points
and 10 boards and Pau Gasol added 17 points for LA, which has won three
straight after starting the season 0-2.

Bynum initially received a five-game suspension for committing a hard foul on
J.J. Barea in the finale of the Lakers’ sweep at the hands of the Mavericks in
last season’s playoffs. The suspension was reduced to four games due to the
shortened 66-game season, however.

“I was pretty winded today,” said Bynum. “I wanted to be aggressive. I wanted
to get the ball down low and make shots.”

Al Harrington paced the Nuggets yesterday with 21 points, while Nene, Arron
Afflalo and Andre Miller each finished with 13. Danilo Gallinari missed a
potential tying layup with 1.9 seconds left as Denver dropped its second
straight.

With the game deadlocked at 89, Bynum put his team on top by blocking a Nene
shot, running the floor and converting a contested layup in the paint for a
91-89 lead.

The Nuggets — particularly Gallinari — failed to pull even down the stretch
despite several opportunities. Ty Lawson missed a pair of free throws with
1:13 remaining and Gallinari was well off on an open three-point attempt
seconds later.

With under 10 seconds remaining, Miller corralled a Bryant miss and found a
streaking Gallinari, who was too strong with a left-handed layup. The ball hit
glass and bounced harmlessly off the rim. Bryant grabbed the rebound and hit
1-of-2 foul shots to seal the win.

“The game of basketball treats you badly sometimes,” said Nuggets coach George
Karl. “We’ll have to make adjustments.”

Denver took two of three meetings with the Lakers a year ago.

Center Andrew Bynum scored 29 points in his first game of the season after serving a suspension as the LA Lakers came from behind to beat the Denver Nuggets 92-89 in Los Angeles.

Bynum’s layup sent the Lakers ahead 91-89 with 1:52 to play as they powered past Denver’s five-point fourth-quarter lead.

He had been suspended for the first four games of the shortened NBA season because of a flagrant foul against Dallas in the Western Conference playoffs last season.

Bynum had been originally suspended for five games but that was reduced because of the shortened schedule.

The big man also had 13 rebounds and two blocked shots as new coach Mike Brown’s coaching style suited his play.

“They’re looking for me a lot and I’m a focal point early in the offense,” Bynum said.

But he paid a price in the early going, he said.

“I was winded like crazy today,” the out-of-shape Bynum said. “First game … I couldn’t breathe in the first six minutes.”

But even if he was winded, his domination inside was too much for the Nuggets to handle.

“His power around the basket, we haven’t seen it yet,” Denver coach George Karl said.

“We’ll have to make some adjustments on him, there’s no question.”

Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol each added 17 points for the Lakers, who had started the season 0-2 but have now won three successive games.

Al Harrington led the Nuggets with 21 points.

The Nuggets had an 85-80 lead after Harrington’s three-pointer with five minutes to play.

But the Lakers pulled even at 89-89 on Bryant’s two free throws after Derek Fisher’s hustle to save the ball after missing a three-pointer.

Then Bynum blocked Nene Hilario’s layup attempt and got the go-ahead basket.

Meanwhile, Denver was drawing blanks.

“We get three layups and a couple free throws in the last three minutes of the game and we miss all of them,” Karl said.

“We gave them too much hope, from Bynum and that loose ball from Fisher, and we never got that defensive confidence because we didn’t rebound the ball.”

Andrew Bynum had 29 points and 13 rebounds in his season debut following a four-game suspension that carried over from the playoffs, and the Lakers beat the Denver Nuggets, 92-89, on Saturday afternoon at Staples Center.

Bynum shot 13 for 18, helping the Lakers win their third straight following the team’s first 0-2 start since 2002-03.

The 7-foot center was suspended without pay for the first four games of the season because of a flagrant foul against Dallas point guard Jose Barea in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals. The original ban was five games, but was reduced on Dec. 23 as a result of a shortened schedule caused by the NBA lockout.

Bynum totaled 41 points and 23 rebounds in two preseason games against the Clippers.

Kobe Bryant, bogged down by foul trouble, had 17 points along with nine assists and 10 rebounds. The Lakers overcame 2-for-24 shooting from three-point range.

Reserve forward Al Harrington had 21 points for the Nuggets, who have lost 25 of their last 29 road games against the Lakers.

The Lakers missed their first 12 shots from 3-point range — all of them in the first half — before Matt Barnes connected with 11:11 left in the third to put Los Angeles ahead 49-47. The Nuggets weren’t much better from behind the arc, missing nine of their first 10 before finishing up 7 for 26.

Trailing 71-69 after three quarters, the Lakers tied it four times before Harrington’s 3-pointer gave Denver an 85-80 lead with 5:29 to play. Bynum guided in a pass above the rim from Bryant and converted the ensuing free throw to narrow the gap to 89-87 with 3:23 left.

Derek Fisher, who fouled out with six points in his 500th consecutive game, missed a 3-point shot trying to beat the 24-second clock — but hustled all the way to the other side of the court to fall on the loose ball and get a timeout with 2:29 remaining and the Lakers still down by two.

Bryant tied it 89-all with a pair of free throws and Bynum blocked a layup by Nene with 2 minutes left before converting a layup at the other end for a 91-89 lead with 1:50 to go.

The Nuggets had a few opportunities to pull it out. But Gasol blocked a layup by Ty Lawson, who then missed two free throws the next time the Nuggets had possession. Danilo Gallinari had a chance to tie it, but blew an easy fast-break layup after a missed jumper by Bryant at the other end.

Bynum made four of his first five shots and finished the first quarter with 10 points. Bryant, who averaged 27.8 points through the first four games despite playing with a torn ligament in his right wrist, missed his first three shots and played more than 14 scoreless minutes before ending the drought on a floater that put the Lakers ahead 38-36 with 3:40 left in the second quarter.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Raymond Feltonwas less concerned about showing up his old team than he was with helping his new one pull out a win.

Felton had 23 points, including a key 3-pointer down the stretch, and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Denver Nuggets 111-102 on Thursday night to remain undefeated after three games.

“We showed some guts,” said Felton, who spent time last season with the Nuggets. “We showed we could get a tough win.”

Wesley Matthews had 25 points, including five 3-pointers in the second half, and Jamal Crawford finished with 22 points, 14 in the fourth quarter.

Portland, which opened the season with wins over Philadelphia and Sacramento, led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but the team was plagued by 25 turnovers.

Ty Lawson had 25 points and eight steals for the Nuggets. His 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter tied it at 98 before the Blazers pulled away.

It was the season’s first loss for Denver, which was coming off a 117-100 victory over Utah on Wednesday night.

While the Nuggets had just seven turnovers, they couldn’t hit from beyond the arc, making just four of 20 3-point attempts.

“We had a lot of open shots and we didn’t knock them down – simple as that,” Lawson said. “I don’t know how many threes we missed, and most of them were wide-open shots.”

The teams traded point guards on NBA draft night in June. The Blazers got Felton, now a starter, while the Nuggets got Andre Miller, who backs up Lawson.

The Nuggets also have former Blazers player Rudy Fernandez on their roster. The Spanish shooter was traded to Dallas on draft night, then sent to Denver in a deal earlier this month.

Nuggets coach George Karl noted Denver’s many connections with the Blazers, including his own friendship with Portland coach Nate McMillan.

“Your enemies motivate you,” Karl said. “But your friends really motivate you.”

Felton hugged Karl on the court just before the game started, and Miller was greeted with hearty applause when he came into the game midway through the first quarter.

Afterward, Felton said his motivation wasn’t to beat Denver, with whom he played in 21 games last season after starting the season with the Knicks.

“The city was good to me. The fans were good to me. Nothing against them,” he said. “Just trying to get the win.”

The Blazers jumped out to a 30-17 lead in the first quarter after Nicolas Batum‘s pass to Kurt Thomas for the layup under the basket. The 13-point lead came despite eight turnovers in the opening period.

Denver closed to 44-41 on Danilo Gallinari‘s dunk with just over four minutes to go before the break. Al Harrington hit a driving layup to pull the Nuggets even at 53 at halftime.

Lawson pulled the Nuggets in front 57-55 early in the second half, but Matthews made four three pointers. The Blazers went back up 69-63 midway through the third quarter.

The Blazers clung to the lead until former teammate Fernandez made a layup and a 3-pointer to tie it at 84 early in the fourth.

After Lawson hit a 3-pointer to make it 98-all midway through the final period, Jamal Crawford hit a free throw – for his 14th point of the quarter – and Matthews sunk a jumper and a 3-pointer to give Portland a 104-98 lead.

Arron Afflalo made a pair of free throws to narrow it for Denver, but following some sloppy play by both sides, Felton hit his 3-pointer to give the Blazers a 107-100 lead with 1:45 left.

“At the end we just missed our assignments and left them open for the threes,” Lawson said.

LaMarcus Aldridge, the Blazers’ leading scorer, was held to 13 points. He blamed “heavy legs.”

“It’s tough out there, but definitely happy to see the guards carry us,” Aldridge said. “They made some big shots. I was trying to do my job and force two to play me, and find the guy who was open.”

NOTES: The home team has won the series between the Nuggets and the Blazers for the past eight meetings. The teams split their four games last season. … The Nuggets were 0 for 11 in 3-point attempts in the first half. … A fan in the stands held a sign in the fourth quarter reading, “Denver, where is Tebow when you need him?”

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Wesley Matthews had 25 points, including five 3-pointers in the second half, and the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Denver Nuggets 111-102 on Thursday night to stay undefeated after three games this season.

Raymond Felton had 23 points, including a 3-pointer with 1:45 left as the Blazers pulled away from the Nuggets, who knotted the game at 98 midway through the fourth quarter.

Portland, which opened the season with wins over Philadelphia and Sacramento, led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but the team was plagued by 25 turnovers.

Ty Lawson had 25 points and eight steals for the Nuggets, who dropped their first game of the season. Denver was coming off a 117-100 victory over Utah on Wednesday night.

The two teams traded point guards on NBA draft night in June. The Blazers got Felton, now a starter, while the Nuggets got Andre Miller, who backs up Lawson.

The Nuggets also have former Blazer Rudy Fernandez on their roster. The Spanish shooter was traded to Dallas on draft night, then sent to Denver in a deal earlier this month.

Nuggets coach George Karl noted Denver’s’ many connections with the Blazers, including his own friendship with Portland coach Nate McMillan.

” Your enemies motivate you,” Karl said. “But your friends really motivate you.”

Felton hugged Karl on the court just before the game started, and Miller was greeted with hearty applause when he came into the game midway through the first quarter.

The Blazers jumped out to a 30-17 lead in the first quarter after Nicolas Batum’s pass to Kurt Thomas for the layup under the basket. The 13-point lead came despite eight turnovers in the opening period.

After starting the game with a 2-0 lead, the Denver Nuggets have had to crawl their way back to tie the Portland Trail Blazers at halftime, 53-53. The Nuggets had been down after the first quarter, 30-17, but then came back with 36 points in the second quarter.

It hasn’t been a pretty game for the Nuggets from the field, shooting 36.5 percent over two quarters. Danilo Gallinari has attempted 10 shots but made just three. Andre Miller has also struggled, connecting on just 2 of 9 shots. Collectively, the Nuggets have attempted 11 three-pointers and missed on all of them. Ty Lawson is the only Nuggets to reach double digits in points, scoring 10.

Raymond Felton has also scored 10 points to lead the Blazers. The Blazers have been almost as bad on three-pointers, making just one on 10 shots. Portland has a 33-20 edge in rebounding, but Denver has 10 steals already.

Denver Nuggets rookies Jordan Hamilton and Julyan Stone will need to wait for another game to be active for a game. For the third game in a row the two rookies will be inactive for the Nuggets. For Hamilton, this means that to start his career he has missed games against the team that drafted and traded him (the Dallas Mavericks) and the team that traded him within moments of acquiring him (the Portland Trail Blazers).

The Nuggets’ third rookie, Kenneth Faried, has been active for for each game this season, but he only saw action in Wednesday’s game against the Utah Jazz. The Manimal went 0-for-3 from the field but did pull down four rebounds and block one shot. In a game that is expected to be competitive, Faried might not play on Thursday night.

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Nuggets are finally opening their season against the NBA’s defending champions.

Monday’s game against the Mavericks starts at 6:30 p.m. Mountain in Dallas.

The Nuggets realize they will be overlooked this season. They don’t have a bona fide star or a household name on the roster. The closest thing they have is Danilo Gallinari, who averaged 14.7 points after arriving in Denver following the Carmelo Anthony trade.

But coach George Karl insisted having one is merely a luxury and not a mandate. To him, the Mavericks proved that point in winning the NBA title last season. They had one focal point and a reliable complement of players.
