Read More: George Karl (H – DEN), Denver Nuggets

Are the Denver Nuggets a sleeper pick in the NBA this season? If they are, it appears that Sports Illustrated’s Britt Robson is already feeling the Nuggets to be the surprise team of the season. In his preseason NBA power rankings, Robson places the Nuggets as his No. 5 team:

[George Karl] also has a nice mix of unselfish, well-paid stars and hungry role players who will scrap with opponents at both ends of the court in the high altitude. It is a situation tailor-made for his preferred coaching style. Don’t sleep on Denver [...] The Nuggets have a roster — and a coach — that can wear you out.

Robson is definitely more upbeat about the Nuggets than other power rankings writers. Others see the Nuggets struggling to create new chemistry after losing Wilson Chandler, Kenyon Martin and J.R. Smith to China. However, retaining Nene and Arron Afflalo has far more impact than losing those other three since they weren’t going to return anyway (Chandler, though, could have been an exception).

Predictably, the Miami Heat, the Dallas Mavericks and the Chicago Bulls take up three of the top four spots. The surprise, though, comes in at No. 2. The Oklahoma City Thunder take that spot. They could be the new powerhouse team in the NBA.

Read More: Earl Clark (F – ORL), Denver Nuggets

While Dwight Howard and Chris Paul hold up free agency moves for some teams, the Denver Nuggets hope Earl Clark will forget all about that and sign with the team. The Nuggets have offered a deal to Clark, though no contract details are known, reports Alex Kennedy of Hoops World. Clark would like to re-sign with the Orlando Magic, but the Dwight Howard situation has put a hold on that.

Clark, the 14th overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft, was traded from the Phoenix Suns to the magic in Dec. 2010 as part of the Vince Carter deal. The Nuggets could use the 6-foot-10 forward in the front court with the losses of Kenyon Martin and the possible departure of Nene.

He seems like a decent role player right now.

<!--Saxotech Paragraph Count: 14
–>

Locked out, Andre Miller went looking for basketball games.

The Denver Nuggets point guard wasn’t picky, either. He just wanted to play, joining a parks and rec league he found on the Internet and suiting up for an intramural squad at a local college.

Soon, he won’t have to worry about finding a game.

With a new collective bargaining agreement tentatively in place, the Nuggets were provisionally open for business Thursday. Miller and Chris “Birdman” Andersen were among the first to arrive, anxious to resume working out again.

“I wanted to come and do something a little bit different,” Miller said. “Come and get used to an NBA court instead of playing on some small courts where it feels like nine-foot rims.”

For Miller, being in this building again seemed almost surreal.

He departed Denver with bitter feelings after being dealt to Philly in the December 2006 deal that brought Allen Iverson to town. Reacquired from Portland in a draft-day trade last summer, his emotions now are much different.

The Nuggets are going to have a new look once the team assembles again. They had three free agents – Kenyon Martin, J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler – bolt for China and they won’t be back.

So now, a priority is placed on bringing back free agents Nene and Arron Afflalo.

Afflalo is restricted and Denver can match any offer. Nene opted out of the last year of his contract and is certain to draw a lot of interest once free agency opens.

“If he goes somewhere else, we’re just going to have to deal with that hole,” Andersen said.

Want Nene back with the Nuggets?

“Of course. Why wouldn’t I?” Andersen said. “He’s a big presence in the paint and he’s physical. He’s a great offensive player.

“I just wish he would pass me the ball a little bit more.”

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Read More: J.R. Smith (F – DEN), Kenyon Martin (F – DEN), Wilson Chandler (G – DEN), Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets

It sounds like the plot to a bad action movie: Two Americans, held captive in China. Will they ever be released? Well, this time it’s not a bad action movie, especially because J.R. Smith in China probably qualifies more as a comedy. ESPN’s Mark Stein reported on Monday that despite a “no opt-out” clause that was reportedly locked in to any contract signed by an American player with a team in the Chinese Basketball Association, it is expected that Smith and Wilson Chandler, two of the three Nuggets currently hooping in the Far East, will be released by their respective teams if and when the NBA lockout ends.

So, how would Smith and Chandler be able to return home even though their contracts supposedly prevent that from happening? Well, the two players can’t just walk away from their duties with their Chinese teams, but the Chinese teams can wave the two players, and at that point the players would be free to do whatever they pleased, which presumably wouldn’t involve signing with the CBA version of the Cleveland Cavaliers. So yes, contract loopholes. Is there anything more American?

As for that third Nugget… well, Kenyon Martin might not be so lucky. It’s believed that Xinjiang, the Chinese team that Martin is currently playing for, would want him to stay, and at that point, Martin would have no recourse. Unless, of course, he can get Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker on the phone.

That’s all the news for today.

AP Photo/Julie Jacobson

Denver Nuggets’ Kenyon Martin, left, is fouled as he shoots while playing in an Impact League basketball game, Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, in Las Vegas. About 50 NBA players have gathered in Las Vegas to train privately and play pick-up games during the lockout.

The Denver Nuggets’ options could be limited if there’s an NBA season.
Three of their free agents have decided to play in China — Kenyon Martin became the third on Wednesday — and two starters are taking their games to Europe.
And while Ty Lawson and Danilo Gallinari can return if there indeed is a 2011-12 season, Martin won’t be able to leave his Chinese Basketball Association squad until the season ends in March.
J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler have also elected to play in China, which won’t allow NBA players to opt out of their one-year contracts should the lockout end.
Martin’s agent, Andy Miller, confirmed to The Associated Press the forward has agreed to a deal with the Xinjiang Flying Tigers. He will join shooting guard Quincy Douby, a former first-round draft pick by the Sacramento Kings.
Martin’s signing was first reported by The Denver Post.
“He’s looking forward to the opportunity and global expansion of his image/game,” Miller wrote in an email. “He’s feeling great.”
Martin gave the Nuggets an inside toughness last season. But he’s been plagued by balky knees throughout his seven seasons in Denver.
The 33-year-old forward missed the first 26 games last season as he recovered from another knee operation. Martin finished strong, averaging 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds, and even took on some of the leadership responsibilities when Carmelo Anthony was traded to the New York Knicks.
Although it was by no means certain Martin would return to the Nuggets in 2011-12, this will definitely have the team on the lookout for an aggressive rebounder to fill his role.
Not only that, but perimeter shooters are needed to replace Smith and Chandler. Smith signed a one-year deal with a team in Zhejiang, the same province Chandler is heading to but not the same team.
Chandler already is in China and is quickly adjusting to his new surroundings.
On a recent Twitter post, Chandler wrote, “just walked/climbed about 4 or 5 miles on the great wall of china…”
Lawson is electing to play in Lithuania and can return if there’s a resolution to the labor strife. Same with Gallinari, who rejoined his former Italian team Olimpia Milano on Tuesday.
Gallinari played for Olimpia from 2005 to 2008 before being drafted sixth overall by the New York Knicks in 2008. The Knicks dealt him to the Nuggets in the blockbuster deal involving Anthony.
Camps had been expected to open Oct. 3 with the regular season beginning in early November. But that could be in jeopardy with the sides still bickering over the salary cap structure.

Not much else going on in the NBA world today.

Sep 21, 2011 – Kenyon Martin is the latest Denver Nuggets free agent to take his art to China, as Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post reports that the 33-year-old power forward will sign a record-breaking contract with Xiangiang Guanghui of the Chinese Basketball Association, where he’ll join Quincy Douby. Fellow Nuggets free agents Wilson Chandler and J.R. Smith have already signed with CBA clubs, point guard Ty Lawson signed a deal to play in Lithuania during the NBA lockout and Danilo Gallinari has agreed to play in Italy. But while Lawson and Gallinari, who remain under contract with Denver, will be legally compelled to return to the Nuggets should the lockout end, the CBA has ruled that contracts signed by its teams cannot contain NBA out clauses. That means that, according to the rule, the Nuggets will be missing Chandler, Smith and now Martin all season if the lockout ends.

It’s unclear whether Martin would have been back regardless: Denver has seemed to move in a more youthful direction, and the power forward will soon turn 34. The Nuggets drafted Kenneth Faried in June, and will likely spend a good chunk of change to retain free agent center Nene, the team’s most vital remaining player. Martin was a popular pick to join a championship contender in a late-career chase for a ring.

Remember how cool it was when Chauncey Billups came home to play for the Nuggets?

A similar thing is about to happen in Milan.

Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari, an Italian who spent several years in Milan, has signed a contract with the pro team there, Olimpia Milano, according to a source close to the situation. Gallinari’s new contract has an “out” clause, the source said. That means if the NBA lockout ends, Gallinari can leave Italy and return to play for the Nuggets.

Gallinari played for Olimpia Milano from 2005-08 before entering the NBA draft. He was selected sixth overall by the New York Knicks in 2008 and traded to Denver in February as part of the Carmelo Anthony trade.

Gallinari is one of the Nuggets’ top young talents. He averaged 14.7 points and 5.4 rebounds after joining Denver.

Gallinari joins a number of Denver players (and free agents) who are signing overseas, including Ty Lawson (Lithuania), Wilson Chandler (China) and J.R. Smith (China). Kenyon Martin, an unrestricted free agent, also is considering playing in China. Gallinari’s league begins play Oct. 9.

Denver Nuggets free agent J.R. Smith won’t be back in the NBA any time soon if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached, ending the current lockout. Smith has signed a contract with Zhejiang Wanma of the Chinese Basketball Association, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Financial terms of the one-year deal have not yet been learned, but when rumors first broke of this, he was supposedly going to receive $3 million for the year, a record contract in the CBA.

Wojnarowski further reports that Smith was close to a deal with Shanxi, but they backed out at the last moment. Smith now joins teammate Wilson Chandler as another big-name NBA player to sign with a Chinese team. Kenyon Martin is reportedly also in discussions to play in China this upcoming season.

Should the NBA start back up before Wilson’s and Smith’s contracts end in March, neither of the two is able to return until their deals end. The CBA only accepts NBA players not under a current contract and does not provide opt-out clauses.

Seriously, are the Nuggets the only team outside of the Rockets and Lakers on television in China? Is there some sort of affinity for the powder blue? What is the deal with Chinese teams going after Denver Nuggets free agents, potentially keeping them out of the NBA when it resumes this year, if it resumes this year? After J.R. Smith‘s conversations and Wilson Chandler‘s done deal, looks like another Nugget is on the CBA radar:

A third free agent who played for the Nuggets last year is in serious talks to play in China.

Kenyon Martin has received significant interest from two professional teams in the Chinese Basketball Association, which would make him the highest-paid player in the history of that league, a source said today.

via Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin might play in China – The Denver Post.

Martin’s effectiveness has severely deteriorated with injury and age, but he’s a known quantity and has some name value. Martin may not wind up with the Nuggets regardless, though they are hurting for power forward help since that’s the one position they didn’t cash in on in the Melo trade, though they did draft Kenneth Faried.

It’s just odd that there could be three Nuggets free agents all playing in China next year. It’s like some sort of conspiracy. I’m getting all freaked out just writing about it.

K-Mart could be ready to check out of Denver.

When the NBA lockout ends—whenever that’ll be—Denver Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin will become an unrestricted free agent. A former No. 1 overall draft pick, Martin’s up-and-down career has been highlighted by several injuries, so it wasn’t a shock the Nuggets declined to give him a contract extension this past season. With his future in Denver in limbo, Martin has gone ahead and posted his house for sale. But because Martin’s pad is under contract, REMAX’s Nick Evancich, the agent handling the listing, has declined to reveal the sale price.

Above are several pictures of Martin’s crib, along with a video-tour of the house. CelebrityDetective.com, which originally shared the photos, claims K-Mart wanted to make $3.2 million on the transaction, while the YouTube video of the property lists $2.6 million in the description and $2.4 million in the actual title. So, yeah, no one knows how much the asking price is. What we do know: Kenyon Martin will be a free agent when the league resumes, and if this is any indication, he may be on his way out of Denver.
