The Denver Nuggets played well in their back-to-back-to-back stretch.

The Denver Nuggets played well in their back-to-back-to-back stretch. The
Sacramento Kings are hoping things start looking up after a rough start to
theirs.

The Nuggets will try to keep their perfect home record intact when they face
the Kings on Wednesday night.

Denver (4-2) opened a stretch of three games in three nights with a 92-89
road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday, but bounced back with a 99-90
win over the Lakers the following night before recording a 91-86 victory over
Milwaukee on Monday.

The Nuggets, playing without starting forward Nene (bruised heel), showed
signs of fatigue, shooting 39.8 percent while committing 16 turnovers, but
outscored the Bucks 23-12 in the fourth quarter.

Danilo Gallinari finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Ty Lawson had
16 points and six assists.

“They didn’t look like they had three games in three nights,” Milwaukee’s
Stephen Jackson said. “That says a lot about how good of shape they’re in, and
they didn’t have Nene, so you’ve got to credit them for that.”

The win was Denver’s third in as many home games this season. They shut down
the Bucks in the fourth quarter after holding the Lakers to 19 points in the
final period on Sunday. Those teams shot a combined 40.9 percent and were 9 of
42 (21.4 percent) from 3-point range.

“In the fourth quarter it’s very easy to find extra energy,” Gallinari said
of feeding off the crowd. “You have a tight game, you want to win, especially at
home.”

Gallinari has elevated his play of late, collecting 41 points, 14 rebounds
and five steals in the last two games. He had 34 points and 14 boards in his
three previous contests.

The Nuggets may need another big game from him if Nene is sidelined again
Wednesday, although Al Harrington has been playing effectively off the bench. He
had 17 points and eight boards Monday and is averaging 15.7 points and 6.5
rebounds.

Like Denver, Sacramento (2-4) began its back-to-back-to-back series with a
113-96 loss to Memphis on Tuesday, but it could have a tougher time bouncing
back.

The Kings were outscored 31-17 in the first quarter, shooting 5 of 20.
Rookie Jimmer Fredette scored a season-high 17 points, shooting 4 of 6 from
3-point range, while J.J. Hickson contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds.

DeMarcus Cousins came off the bench and had four points and eight rebounds
in 22 minutes. Cousins was told on Sunday to stay away from the team by coach
Paul Westphal after demanding a trade.

“I wouldn’t say it’s resolved,” Westphal said before the game. “We will see
how it plays out. I think DeMarcus has to continue to show maturity and a desire
to go the same direction as his teammates. We’re all hoping that happens.”

Cousins is third on the team with 11.2 points per game and adds 10.6
rebounds.

Sacramento will close this three-game stretch Thursday against Milwaukee.
The Kings starters should be rested after Westphal pulled most of them early
Tuesday. No starter played more than 27 minutes.

The Kings have lost four of five overall against the Nuggets and five
straight in Denver since a 118-115 win on April 5, 2008.

Kobe Bryant reached another career milestone in a mostly forgettable performance by the Los Angeles Lakers star. Danilo Gallinari scored 20 points, Ty Lawson had 17 points and 10 assists and the Denver Nuggets beat the Lakers 99-90 on Sunday night. The Nuggets scored the final 11 points and avenged a three-point loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles less than 24 hours earlier. Bryant scored 16 points to become the sixth player in NBA history to score 28,000 career points. He is first among active players and is 584 points behind former teammate Shaquille O’Neal. Reaching the benchmark came on a night when Bryant was 6 of 28 from the field and 1 of 8 from 3-point range. “We were trying to be aggressive on him and trying to make him take some bad shots,” said Gallinari, who spent much of the game defending Bryant. “When you play defense against him he can make some tough shots. But we did a pretty good job.” Bryant came into Sunday needing just four points short of 28,000 but he didn’t get it until he hit a free throw with 10:43 left in the third quarter. He had a rough start to the night and it never got better. Bryant missed his first five shots and committed two offensive fouls before sitting in the final minute of the first quarter. He returned midway through the second, hit a 3-pointer but missed his next four. “We’ve got tough defenders,” Lawson said. “Kobe’s a great player, he probably had an off-night tonight, but, still, we played great defense.” “He looked tired. I’m glad we were putting pressure on him and making him take tough shots,” he said. After a seesaw battle for most of the final period, the Nuggets closed strong to win it. Gallinari had two fast-break layups to give Denver a two-point lead with 2:07 left. After Pau Gasol missed a short turnaround jumper, Lawson’s layup gave the Nuggets a 94-90 lead with 1:20 left. “It was big,” Lawson said. “Getting easy layups, making free throws and getting stops. We needed that, especially after the last game.” The Lakers could have used a strong night from Bryant to complement the play of the Lakers’ post players. Gasol had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Andrew Bynum had 18 points and 16 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough against Denver. “I think fatigue had a lot to do with this loss because we weren’t playing very smart,” Bynum said. Bryant missed a 3-pointer from the top of the circle near the end and Al Harrington hit a 12-foot jumper to make it 96-90 with 49 seconds left. The Lakers took a 90-88 lead on Bryant’s layup with 2:47 left and didn’t score again. “He’s got to continue to find his stroke,” Lakers coach Mike Brown said of Bryant. “I told the entire team that we shot too many jump shots. We’ve got to drive the ball or get the ball inside, one of the two. We didn’t do a good job with either today.” The Nuggets held a 26-5 edge in fast-break points. “I feel they have size at every position on the court and I feel we have speed at every position on the court,” Nuggets coach George Karl said. “The only way I know to incorporate it into a strategy is try to play fast and quick.” Trailing by 11 at halftime, the Lakers came out strong in the third quarter. Bynum scored seven points in the first four minutes, including a three-point play that tied it at 50. Denver didn’t hit its first field goal of the second half until Lawson’s drive gave the Nuggets the lead back with 7:03 left. Gallinari followed with Denver’s first 3-pointer of the game to make it 55-50. NOTES: Denver was 2 for 18 from 3-point range. … The Lakers have played six games in the first eight days of the season, including three in three nights to open the schedule. … Lawson has scored in double figures in four of Denver’s first five games. … Denver came into Sunday second in scoring in the NBA but 24th in 3-point shooting.

The Lakers could have used a strong night from Bryant to complement the play of the Lakers’ post players.

We didn’t do a good job with either today.”

The Nuggets held a 26-5 edge in fast-break points.

“I feel they have size at every position on the court and I feel we have speed at every position on the court,” Nuggets coach George Karl said. “The only way I know to incorporate it into a strategy is try to play fast and quick.”

Trailing by 11 at halftime, the Lakers came out strong in the third quarter.

Danilo Gallinari scored 20 points, Ty Lawson had 17 points and
10 assists and the Denver Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 99-90
on Sunday night.

Nene had 13 points for the Nuggets, who avenged a three-point
loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles less than 24 hours earlier.

Pau Gasol had 20 points and 11 rebounds and Andrew Bynum had 18
points and 16 rebounds for the Lakers. Kobe Bryant scored 16 points
on 6-of-28 shooting.

After a seesaw battle for most of the final period, the Nuggets
scored the final 11 points to pull out the win.

Gallinari scored two fast-break layups to give Denver a
two-point lead with 2:07 left. After Gasol missed a short
turnaround jumper, Lawson’s layup gave the Nuggets a 94-90 lead
with 1:20 left.

Bryant missed a 3-pointer from the top of the circle and
Harrington hit a 12-foot jumper to make it 96-90 with 49 seconds
left.

The Lakers took a 90-88 lead on Bryant’s layup with 2:47 left
and didn’t score again.

Trailing by 11 at halftime, the Lakers came out strong in the
third quarter. Bynum scored seven points in the first four minutes,
including a three-point play that tied it at 50-all.

Denver didn’t hit its first field goal of the second half until
Lawson’s drive gave the Nuggets the lead back with 7:03 left.
Gallinari followed with Denver’s first 3-pointer of the game to
make it 55-50.

Denver’s lead grew to nine late in the third before the Lakers
made another run to pull to 72-71 heading into the fourth.

Bryant missed his first five shots and committed two offensive
fouls before sitting in the final minute of the first quarter. He
returned midway through the second, hit a 3-pointer but missed his
next four.

The Lakers team didn’t fare any better. Los Angeles missed its
last 11 shots of the first half and shot just 32 percent at the
break.

The Nuggets struggled from the field, too, missing all nine of
their 3-point shots before the break, but they surged at the end of
the second quarter. Leading 39-36, Al Harrington hit four free
throws and had a nice interior pass to set up a dunk by Chris
Andersen that helped Denver take a 47-36 lead at halftime.

NOTES: Denver was 2 for 18 from 3-point range. … The Lakers
have played six games in the first eight days of the season,
including three in three nights to open the schedule. … Lawson
has scored in double figures in four of Denver’s first five games.
… Denver came into Sunday second in scoring in the NBA but 24th
in 3-point shooting.

Denver makes several miscues late vs. Lakers

LOS ANGELES — Danilo Gallinari wears confidence like it’s some fancy fragrance you can’t pronounce.

He has a perpetual aura, with his 6-foot-10 swagger, his clothing modeling gigs, his hair tousled just so. And yet he’s still a friendly fellow, like the high school quarterback who says hi to the chess team in the hall.

But in the Nuggets’ first four games, notably the past two, Gallinari’s lack of confidence has been ghastly. In Denver’s heartbreaking 92-89 Saturday loss at the Lakers, the Italian forward actually airballed a 3-pointer and later missed a layup, both in the final minute.

Denver was down two with about 10 ticks left on the clock, when Gallinari threw his hand in the face of Kobe Bryant. Upon Bryant’s missed jumper, Gallinari ripped down court, frighteningly open. Steve Blake leapt and tried to “change his shot just a little bit.”

(Reuters) – Center Andrew Bynum scored 29 points in his first game of the season after serving a suspension as the Los Angeles Lakers came from behind to beat the Denver Nuggets 92-89 Saturday.

Bynum’s layup sent the Lakers ahead 91-89 with 1:52 to play as they powered past Denver’s five-point fourth-quarter lead.

He had been suspended for the first four games of the shortened NBA season because of a flagrant foul against Dallas in the Western Conference playoffs last season.

Bynum had been originally suspended for five games but that was reduced because of the shortened schedule.

The big man also had 13 rebounds and two blocked shots as new coach Mike Brown’s coaching style suited his play.

“They’re looking for me a lot and I’m a focal point early in the offense,” Bynum told reporters.

But he paid a price in the early going, he said.

“I was winded like crazy today,” the out-of-shape Bynum said. “First game … I couldn’t breathe in the first six minutes.”

But even if he was winded, his domination inside was too much for the Nuggets to handle.

“His power around the basket, we haven’t seen it yet,” Denver coach George Karl told reporters. “We’ll have to make some adjustments on him, there’s no question.”

Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol each added 17 points for the Lakers, who had started the season 0-2 but have now won three successive games.

Al Harrington led the Nuggets with 21 points.

The Nuggets had an 85-80 lead after Harrington’s three-pointer with five minutes to play.

But the Lakers pulled even at 89-89 on Bryant’s two free throws after Derek Fisher’s hustle to save the ball after missing a three-pointer.

Then Bynum blocked Nene Hilario’s layup attempt and got the go-ahead basket.

Meanwhile, Denver was drawing blanks.

“We get three layups and a couple free throws in the last three minutes of the game and we miss all of them,” Karl said.

“We gave them too much hope, from Bynum and that loose ball from Fisher, and we never got that defensive confidence because we didn’t rebound the ball.”

Andrew Bynum provided the Los Angeles Lakers with a powerful performance in his season debut, following a four-game suspension that carried over from the playoffs.

It all would have been for naught, however, had it not been for some clutch shooting in the fourth quarter by Kobe Bryant and a couple of equally critical hustle plays by Derek Fisher and Pau Gasol in the final minutes.

Bynum scored 29 points on 13 for 18 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds, leading the Lakers to a 92-89 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday. The 7-foot center played 31 1/2 grueling minutes, helping the Lakers win their third straight following their first 0-2 start since 2002-03.

“They were looking for me a lot. I was a focal point early in the offense, so I knew the quicker I got down the court, the better it was,” said Bynum, who made four of his first five shots and finished the first quarter with 10 points. “I was winded like crazy. I couldn’t breathe in the first six minutes. Defensively, getting back and all those things require me to be in better condition. So it’s going to take a little while.”

Bynum was suspended without pay for the first four games because of a flagrant foul against Dallas’ J.J. Barea in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals. The original ban was five games, but was reduced on Dec. 23 as a result of a shortened schedule caused by the lockout.

“I really didn’t have the highest expectations,” said the seven-year veteran, who totaled 41 points and 23 rebounds in two preseason games against the Clippers. “I just wanted to come out and be aggressive. I wanted to get it down low, and when I got it, I made shots.”

Bryant, bogged down by foul trouble, had 17 points along with nine assists and 10 rebounds. The Lakers overcame 2-for-24 shooting from 3-point range.

Reserve forward Al Harrington had 21 points for the Nuggets, who have lost 25 of their last 29 road games against the Lakers.

“The game of basketball treats you badly sometimes,” Denver coach George Karl said. “No one feels very good right now. They hurt us rebounding the ball and they hurt us with Bynum’s power underneath the basket. They’ve very good at playing an aggressive style of disrupting you, with guys coming at you on pick-and-rolls.”

The Lakers missed their first 12 shots from 3-point range — all in the first half — before Matt Barnes connected with 11:11 left in the third to put Los Angeles ahead 49-47. The Nuggets weren’t much better from behind the arc, missing nine of their first 10 before finishing up 7 for 26.

Trailing 71-69 after three quarters, the Lakers tied it four times before Harrington’s 3-pointer gave Denver an 85-80 lead with 5:29 to play. Bynum guided in a pass above the rim from Bryant and converted the ensuing free throw to narrow the gap to 89-87 with 3:23 left.

Fisher, who fouled out with six points in his 500th consecutive game, missed a 3-point shot trying to beat the 24-second clock — but hustled all the way to the other side of the court to fall on the loose ball and managed to get a timeout with 2:29 remaining and the Lakers still down by two.

“I haven’t seen it on tape yet, and I’m sure it doesn’t look very graceful. But I’m glad it helped us get a win,” the 37-year-old Fisher said with a chuckle. “You see a ball free and you go for it, especially at that time of the game. To make hustle plays and do the little things, that’s the team that we’re becoming — a team that can figure out a way to grind out wins.

“Once I saw the ball bounce long (Ty) Lawson and I were kind of bumping into each other shoulder-to-shoulder and I started to lose my balance,” Fisher explained. “So it was somewhat surprising that I was still able to figure out a way to find the basketball as I was stumbling and regain control before going out of bounds.”

Bryant tied it 89-all with a pair of free throws, and Bynum blocked a layup by Nene with 2 minutes left before converting a layup at the other end for a 91-89 lead with 1:50 to go.

The Nuggets had a few opportunities to pull it out. But Gasol blocked a layup by Lawson, who missed two free throws the next time the Nuggets had possession. Danilo Gallinari had a chance to tie it, but blew an easy fast-break layup with Steve Blake on his heels after Bryant missed a jumper at the other end.

“We get three layups and a couple of free throws in the last three minutes, and we miss all of them,” Karl lamented. “Our offensive confidence is a little short right now.”

Fisher’s consecutive-game streak is the longest among active NBA players. Former Lakers forward A.C. Green, a teammate of Fisher’s during the 1999-00 season, holds the league record with 1,192 in a row.

‘That’s what’s so amazing about what he was able to accomplish — especially as a big guy out there banging with the best of them,” Fisher said. “For him to be able to have done what it took mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically to be prepared to go to work every single day for all those seasons was a big-time example for me.

“It’s not like I’m chasing any type of number, but I just try to bring the same mentality to work, whether it’s 500 or 1,000. I’m nowhere close to his streak, but I still take great pride in coming to work every day. Those experiences with him were great. We talked a lot and I learned a lot from him.”

Bryant, who averaged 27.8 points through the first four games despite playing with a torn ligament in his right wrist, missed his first three shots and played more than 14 scoreless minutes before ending the drought on a floater that put the Lakers ahead 38-36 with 3:40 left in the second quarter.

Notes: The Lakers have played six times on New Year’s Eve since coming to Los Angeles — all at home (5-1). Their rematch with the Nuggets on Sunday night will mark the first time the Lakers have played on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day in the same season since 1959-60, when the franchise was based in Minneapolis. … Bryant needs four points to become the sixth player in history to reach 28,000.

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Derek Fisher, who fouled out with six points in his 500th consecutive game, missed a 3-point shot trying to beat the 24-second clock — but hustled all the way to the other side of the court to fall on the loose ball and get a timeout with 2:29 remaining and the Lakers still down by two.

Bryant tied it 89-all with a pair of free throws and Bynum blocked a layup by Nene with 2 minutes left before converting a layup at the other end for a 91-89 lead with 1:50 to go.

The Nuggets had a few opportunities to pull it out. But Gasol blocked a layup by Ty Lawson, who then missed two free throws the next time the Nuggets had possession. Danilo Gallinari had a chance to tie it, but blew an easy fast-break layup after a missed jumper by Bryant at the other end.

Bynum made four of his first five shots and finished the first quarter with 10 points. Bryant, who averaged 27.8 points through the first four games despite playing with a torn ligament in his right wrist, missed his first three shots and played more than 14 scoreless minutes before ending the drought on a floater that put the Lakers ahead 38-36 with 3:40 left in the second quarter.

Felton had 23 points, including a key 3-pointer down the stretch, and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Denver Nuggets 111-102 on Thursday night to remain undefeated after three games. “We showed some guts,” said Felton, who spent time last season with the Nuggets. “We showed we could get a tough win.” Wesley Matthews had 25 points, including five 3-pointers in the second half, and Jamal Crawford finished with 22 points, 14 in the fourth quarter. Portland, which opened the season with wins over Philadelphia and Sacramento, led by as many as 13 points in the first half, but the team was plagued by 25 turnovers. Ty Lawson had 25 points and eight steals for the Nuggets. His 3-pointer midway through the fourth quarter tied it at 98 before the Blazers pulled away. It was the season’s first loss for Denver, which was coming off a 117-100 victory over Utah on Wednesday night. While the Nuggets had just seven turnovers, they couldn’t hit from beyond the arc, making just four of 20 3-point attempts. “We had a lot of open shots and we didn’t knock them down — simple as that,” Lawson said. “I don’t know how many threes we missed, and most of them were wide-open shots.” The teams traded point guards on NBA draft night in June. The Blazers got Felton, now a starter, while the Nuggets got Andre Miller, who backs up Lawson. The Nuggets also have former Blazers player Rudy Fernandez on their roster. The Spanish shooter was traded to Dallas on draft night, then sent to Denver in a deal earlier this month. Nuggets coach George Karl noted Denver’s many connections with the Blazers, including his own friendship with Portland coach Nate McMillan. “Your enemies motivate you,” Karl said. “But your friends really motivate you.” Felton hugged Karl on the court just before the game started, and Miller was greeted with hearty applause when he came into the game midway through the first quarter. Afterward, Felton said his motivation wasn’t to beat Denver, with whom he played in 21 games last season after starting the season with the Knicks. “The city was good to me. The fans were good to me. Nothing against them,” he said. “Just trying to get the win.” The Blazers jumped out to a 30-17 lead in the first quarter after Nicolas Batum’s pass to Kurt Thomas for the layup under the basket. The 13-point lead came despite eight turnovers in the opening period. Denver closed to 44-41 on Danilo Gallinari’s dunk with just over four minutes to go before the break. Al Harrington hit a driving layup to pull the Nuggets even at 53 at halftime. Lawson pulled the Nuggets in front 57-55 early in the second half, but Matthews made four three pointers. The Blazers went back up 69-63 midway through the third quarter. The Blazers clung to the lead until former teammate Fernandez made a layup and a 3-pointer to tie it at 84 early in the fourth. After Lawson hit a 3-pointer to make it 98-all midway through the final period, Jamal Crawford hit a free throw — for his 14th point of the quarter — and Matthews sunk a jumper and a 3-pointer to give Portland a 104-98 lead. Arron Afflalo made a pair of free throws to narrow it for Denver, but following some sloppy play by both sides, Felton hit his 3-pointer to give the Blazers a 107-100 lead with 1:45 left. “At the end we just missed our assignments and left them open for the threes,” Lawson said. LaMarcus Aldridge, the Blazers’ leading scorer, was held to 13 points. He blamed “heavy legs.” “It’s tough out there, but definitely happy to see the guards carry us,” Aldridge said. “They made some big shots. I was trying to do my job and force two to play me, and find the guy who was open.” NOTES: The home team has won the series between the Nuggets and the Blazers for the past eight meetings. The teams split their four games last season. … The Nuggets were 0 for 11 in 3-point attempts in the first half. … A fan in the stands held a sign in the fourth quarter reading, “Denver, where is Tebow when you need him?”

On a night in which the Denver Nuggets stole the Trail Blazers blind as Ray Charles and Portland’s Wesley Matthews got hot as Mila Kunis in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” ironic it was that Matthews’ steal was the game’s biggest play.

The Nuggets trailed 104-100 with two minutes remaining, but point guard Ty Lawson – fast as a Vegas-strip nightclub all night long – was streaking toward the Portland basket aiming to cut the gap in half.

In his path was Matthews, who poked the ball away from Lawson and grabbed it for a turnover. Seconds later, Raymond Felton was burying a long 3-pointer to kick off a 7-0 run that put an exclamation point on a 111-102 victory Thursday at the Rose Garden.

The win pushed the Blazers’ record to 3-0 and left them as one of a half-dozen unbeaten NBA teams after just five days of action.

Guards Matthews, Raymond Felton and Jamal Crawford – all igloo-cold from the field the first two games – combined for 70 points to steer Portland through turbulent waters.

It was a fast-paced, intense and entertaining matchup between Northwest Division rivals on a night when each was very good at some things and very bad at others.

“A confusing game in the sense of what the stat sheet looked like,” observed Portland coach Nate McMillan.

	To wit:

	• Portland lost the turnover battle 25-7. At one point late in the fourth quarter, the Blazers had 24 giveaways to the Nuggets’ four. It was the biggest turnover disparity in franchise history for a game in which the Blazers won. The Nuggets scored 29 points off Portland’s 25 turnovers, while the Blazers got 10 points off Denver’s seven giveaways.

“You don’t win a lot of games with 25 turnovers,” McMillan said. The Nuggets “pose some matchup problems for you, trying to guard their spread offense and small unit. We were just too loose with the ball, too many guys trying to do too much. (But) we found a way to get a win.”

	• Portland lost the steals battle 16-3. Lawson fleeced the Blazers eight times. Denver scored 28 fastbreak points to 11 for Portland.

	• Portland won the rebound battle 50-30. Marcus Camby led the way with 12, but all seven other Blazers who played had at least five.

	• Portland won the blocked-shot battle 9-2. Camby swatted three.

	• Portland won the shooting battle in a landslide. The Blazers fired at a .519 clip from the field – .618 in the second half. They were 1 for 10 from 3-point range in the first half, 7 for 10 in the second half. Denver shot .402 from the field, but that was the good news. The Nuggets were 0 for 11 on treys in the first half and missed 12 in a row before Lawson finally hit one in the third quarter. They finished 4 for 20 from beyond the arc.

“We couldn’t find an offensive rhythm – or even an offensive player – and we still stayed in the game,” Denver coach George Karl said.

Portland jumped in front 19-6 as the Nuggets chipped paint off the rim, or worse – Al Harrington had three airballs, including one on a free throw in the first half. The Blazers led 30-17 after one quarter, with the Nuggets taking 29 shots and making only eight to that point.

But Denver reeled in the Blazers, getting to a 53-53 tie at the half.

The Nuggets were on top 59-55 early in the third quarter when Matthews found a zone, bombing in four straight 3-pointers in a three-minute stretch to take Portland on a 14-4 spurt and into a 69-63 lead.

Things stayed close until near game’s end. Denver’s last lead was at 93-92 with 7:30 to play, but the Nuggets were very much in striking distance when Matthews turned the tables on Lawson for the steal that broke the visitors’ back.

Matthews had just turned the ball over at the other end.

“The one thing I was thinking was, ‘I’ve got to get the ball back,’ “ he said. “It was too late in the game for a turnover. I wouldn’t be able to sleep if a turnover cost us something.”

After Lawson hit a 3-pointer to make it 98-all midway through the final period, Jamal Crawford hit a free throw — for his 14th point of the quarter — and Matthews sunk a jumper and a 3-pointer to give Portland an 104-98 lead.

Arron Afflalo made a pair of free throws to narrow it for Denver, but following some sloppy play by both sides Felton hit his 3-pointer to give the Blazers a 107-100 lead with 1:45 left.

Notes: The home team has won the series between the Nuggets and the Blazers for the past eight meetings. The two teams split their four games last season. … The Nuggets were 0 for 11 in 3-point attempts in the first half. … A fan in the stands held a sign in the fourth quarter reading “Denver, where is Tebow when you need him?”

The Denver Nuggets lost its first game of the season, falling to the Portland Trail Blazers, 111-102, on Thursday night. The Nuggets entered the final quarter of play down just four points and had even taken a lead midway through the frame, but they were unable to hold it.

With 7:45 left in the game, the Nuggets held a 93-90 lead and saw it evaporate into a 98-98 tie with 5:39 to go. The Blazers then went on 13-4 run to end the game.

Ty Lawson continued his hot start to the season, scoring 25 points. Arron Afflalo added 19 while Nene put in 10 points and nine rebounds. However, the team collectively had a poor shooting night, only making 40.2 percent of it field goals. They sank just four of 20 three-point attempts.

Timofey Mozgov played just seven minutes after picking up three fouls in the first three and a half minutes of the first quarter.

Wesley Matthews and Raymond Felton scored 25 and 23 points, respectively. The Blazers outrebounded the Nuggets, 50-30, but they had a horrible turnover margin, 25-7 in favor of the Nuggets.

The 2-1 Nuggets take Friday off before beginning a back-to-back-to-back against the Los Angeles Lakers twice and the Milwaukee Bucks,
