STATS Writer

(AP) — The Denver Nuggets played well in their back-to-back-to-back stretch. The Sacramento Kings are hoping things start looking up after a rough start to theirs.

The Nuggets will try to keep their perfect home record intact when they face the Kings on Wednesday night.

Denver (4-2) opened a stretch of three games in three nights with a 92-89 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday, but bounced back with a 99-90 win over the Lakers the following night before recording a 91-86 victory over Milwaukee on Monday.

The Nuggets, playing without starting forward Nene (bruised heel), showed signs of fatigue, shooting 39.8 percent while committing 16 turnovers, but outscored the Bucks 23-12 in the fourth quarter.

Danilo Gallinari finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Ty Lawson had 16 points and six assists.

“They didn’t look like they had three games in three nights,” Milwaukee’s Stephen Jackson said. “That says a lot about how good of shape they’re in, and they didn’t have Nene, so you’ve got to credit them for that.”

The win was Denver’s third in as many home games this season. They shut down the Bucks in the fourth quarter after holding the Lakers to 19 points in the final period on Sunday. Those teams shot a combined 40.9 percent and were 9 of 42 (21.4 percent) from 3-point range.

“In the fourth quarter it’s very easy to find extra energy,” Gallinari said of feeding off the crowd. “You have a tight game, you want to win, especially at home.”

Gallinari has elevated his play of late, collecting 41 points, 14 rebounds and five steals in the last two games. He had 34 points and 14 boards in his three previous contests.

The Nuggets may need another big game from him if Nene is sidelined again Wednesday, although Al Harrington has been playing effectively off the bench. He had 17 points and eight boards Monday and is averaging 15.7 points and 6.5 rebounds.

Like Denver, Sacramento (2-4) began its back-to-back-to-back series with a 113-96 loss to Memphis on Tuesday, but it could have a tougher time bouncing back.

The Kings were outscored 31-17 in the first quarter, shooting 5 of 20. Rookie Jimmer Fredette scored a season-high 17 points, shooting 4 of 6 from 3-point range, while J.J. Hickson contributed 12 points and 10 rebounds.

DeMarcus Cousins came off the bench and had four points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes. Cousins was told on Sunday to stay away from the team by coach Paul Westphal after demanding a trade.

“I wouldn’t say it’s resolved,” Westphal said before the game. “We will see how it plays out. I think DeMarcus has to continue to show maturity and a desire to go the same direction as his teammates. We’re all hoping that happens.”

Cousins is third on the team with 11.2 points per game and adds 10.6 rebounds.

Sacramento will close this three-game stretch Thursday against Milwaukee. The Kings starters should be rested after Westphal pulled most of them early Tuesday. No starter played more than 27 minutes.

The Kings have lost four of five overall against the Nuggets and five straight in Denver since a 118-115 win on April 5, 2008.

DALLAS (AP) — Ty Lawson and the Denver Nuggets opened their season with a performance that sent a clear message to the rest of the NBA .

DALLAS (AP) — Ty Lawson and the Denver Nuggets opened their season with a performance that sent a clear message to the rest of the NBA.

Not about them. About the Dallas Mavericks.

The reigning champions have quickly become a team everyone wants to play. There’s no telling which is worse right now, their offense or defense, their conditioning or chemistry, as they were drubbed for a second straight game, losing 115-93 to the Nuggets on Monday night.

Dallas gave up 20 straight points in the second quarter and had a stretch of 14 straight missed shots during a 9:52 drought between baskets. It was so bad that their player of the game, Sean Williams, threw up when he left the court.

Williams, the 13th and final guy off the bench, was so gassed from scoring 12 points in 11 energetic minutes that he vomited in front of the team’s bench. Teammates and owner Mark Cuban laughed, and fans in the area gave a light-hearted standing ovation while an usher mopped up the mess.

Williams wasn’t sick, just not quite in game shape because of the lockout. Of course, the way things are going for Dallas, plenty of jokes were made about that being an editorial statement about their performance.

“We look old and slow and out of shape — a bad combination,” said Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 20 points and sat out the entire fourth quarter for a second straight game, yet another indication of how bad things are going. “I still think this team has a lot of potential. But we have to turn the corner.”

The Mavs trailed by 33 in the third quarter, a day after being down by 35 in the third quarter against Miami. Counting a pair of preseason games against Oklahoma City, Dallas has been behind by at least 23 points in every game since being crowned champs.

There are plenty of reasons to choose from: an overhaul of their rotation, the shortened training camp and other teams being motivated to take them down.

“We’re not comfortable with each other on both ends of the floor,” Shawn Marion said. “We’re trying to get acclimated and you can tell it’s not flowing the way it should be and there’s going to be some bumps.”

The challenge for coach Rick Carlisle is finding the right combination of players. He’s trying to squeeze in Lamar Odom, Vince Carter and Delonte West to replace Tyson Chandler, J.J. Barea and others, all with little practice time. Carlisle already has seen a lack of trust on defense, and that throws everything else out of whack.

“We’re going to recharge tomorrow, have a hell of a practice on Wednesday and then we’ve got to go up to Oklahoma City and we’re going to have to play a lot better,” Carlisle said. “I’ve got a lot of work to do.”

The Nuggets hope this was an indication of what they can be like when they have everything clicking, regardless of the foe.

Lawson made 8 of 9 shots in the first half, and finished with 27 points. Andre Miller and Al Harrington each scored 18 points off the bench, and Denver’s deep, athletic roster scored on 19 of its 25 possessions in the second quarter.

“We’ve been jelling real quick,” Lawson said. “I knew we’d come out strong. … That’s when we’re good, when we get out and run. It’s my job to make sure the tempo is fast and guys are running in those lanes.”

Denver made only 12 baskets in the second half, but it hardly mattered. The Nuggets led by 27 at halftime, and stretched it during the third quarter.

“It’s way too early to get crazy but it felt good,” Nuggets coach George Karl said.

Danilo Gallinari had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Arron Afflalo scored 11.

Dallas was so out of sync that fans were booing before halftime. The jeers came when a turnover near midcourt turned into a three-on-none fast break for Denver. The Nuggets had enjoyed so many easy baskets at that point that they didn’t even bother doing anything fancy, with Gallinari softly tossing the ball to Harrington for a routine dunk that made it 65-41.

For Dallas, Jason Kidd scored 12 points, Carter scored 11 and Rodrigue Beaubois scored 10. Aside from Nowitzki and Kidd, the other three starters (Marion, Brendan Haywood and West) scored a combined 11 points.

Odom scored three points, making only 1 of 10 shots.

“We look like a team that’s new,” he said.

Williams played with as much intensity as he could muster because this is his second time in the NBA. After being told he wouldn’t return, he’s trying to prove he has staying power.

Leaving the way he did isn’t the kind of mark he’s trying to make.

Williams actually started losing it while on the court. He caught it in his mouth and hustled off with his cheeks full. He couldn’t make it to the tunnel, or even a trash can.

“It was awkward, man, pretty awkward,” he said. “It’s never happened to me before — not ever, even in a practice.”

NOTES: Dallas is 0-2 for the first time since 2006-07, which is also the last time the Mavs were coming off a trip to the NBA finals. That team actually went 0-4, yet wound up winning 67 games. … Denver got Rudy Fernandez and Corey Brewer in a trade from Dallas during training camp. Fernandez scored eight points and Brewer had five. … The Mavs forced a shot-clock violation on the opening possession of the second half and drew one of the biggest cheers of the night. They ended up keeping the Nuggets below 30 points in the quarter, yet Denver grew its lead anyway. … Kenyon Martin, a Dallas native and former Denver star, watched from the stands. … West started at shooting guard instead of Carter, who started on opening night. Jason Terry replaced West to start the second half.

That’s all for today.

Lopez added that he believes both players will be in Denver’s starting lineup when the team opens the regular season on Dec. 26 against the defending champion Dallas Mavericks. Nene has been hampered by a hamstring injury, while Lawson injured an ankle in practice on Wednesday; both have been considered day-to-day injuries. Lawson is getting four full days of rest between the injury and the season opener.

The team defeated the Phoenix Suns 110-85 in its preseason tuneup on Thursday night. Danilo Gallinari led the team in scoring in the absence of Lawson and Nene.

Read More: George Karl (H – DEN), Oklahoma City Thunder, Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets have been all over the NBA preseason power rankings this week, from as low as No. 19 to as high as No. 5. ESPN’s Marc Stein finally checks in with his own just two days before the start of the season. After finishing at No. 6 in Stein’s last edition all those months ago, the Nuggets open as the No. 9 team, believing that there’s too much of a disparity between a great season and one of doom and gloom:

I hear fretting about the $110 million investment in Nene and Afflalo. I hear Hollinger has the Nuggets forecasted to be the second-best team in the West. I would suggest Denver’s fate lies somewhere between such proclamations of doom and dominance.

That’s a fair take on the team entering the season. Concerns over how the team will work together after a sizable roster turnover fail to take into account that George Karl now has a team capable of doing what he wants: being a fast team that attacks the basket.

Only the Oklahoma City Thunder rank higher among the Northwest Division teams. They are the No. 3 team, behind only the No. 1 Dallas Mavericks and the No. 2 Miami Heat. Will the Thunder be able to shove their way past the Mavericks and make it to the Finals against the Heat?

(Sports Network) – The Denver Nuggets have been a consistent bunch for quite
some time, but this season they could take a turn for the worse under
legendary head coach George Karl.

The Nuggets were able to get by without superstar Carmelo Anthony by winning
50 games for a fourth consecutive season and reaching the playoffs in each of
the past eight, advancing past the first just once in that span. The team did
some negotiating over the abbreviated offseason and the biggest move was re-
signing center Nene.

According to the Denver Post, the deal is worth as much as $67 million over
five years. The 6-foot-11 native of Brazil has played his entire nine-year
career in Denver.

“We’ve always said that Nene is a Nugget, and we are happy to welcome him back
to Denver,” Denver vice president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri said.
“Quality big men are hard to find, but we feel we have one of the best. Not
only is he a great player, but he is a great person who will be part of our
roster for years to come.”

Last season, Nene logged a career high-tying 14.5 per game to go with 7.6
rebounds, which are close to his career numbers of 12.3 points and 6.9 boards
per game. He also led the league in shooting percentage in 2010-11, making
61.5 percent of his attempts.

Denver needed some familiarity with the system since Kenyon Martin, J.R. Smith
and Wilson Chandler playing overseas. The Nuggets acquired forward Rudy
Fernandez and guard/forward Corey Brewer from the Dallas Mavericks this month
in exchange for a second-round draft pick. Fernandez joined the Mavs earlier
this offseason via a three-way trade. He has only played for the Portland
Trail Blazers throughout his three-year career and has averaged 9.1 points,
2.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 218 career games.

Brewer, who won two national titles with Florida and was part of Dallas’
championship team last year, has averaged 8.9 points and 3.2 rebounds over
four seasons with the Mavericks and Timberwolves. Point guard Raymond Felton
was dealt to the Trail Blazers, while Arron Afflalo and Danilo Gallinari are
expected to carry the load along with Nene.

2010-11 Results: 50-32, second in Northwest, lost in West quarterfinals to
Oklahoma City

ADDITIONS: G Andre Miller, G Rudy Fernandez, G Jordan Hamilton, F Corey
Brewer, F DeMarre Carroll, F Kenneth Faried.

PROJECTED STARTING FIVE:

PG- Andre Miller
SG- Arron Afflalo
SF- Danilo Gallinari
PF- Al Harrington
C- Nene

KEY RESERVES: C Chris Anderson; PG Ty Lawson; SG Rudy Fernandez; SF Corey
Brewer; F Michael Ruffin

FRONTCOURT: Nene was fourth on the team with 14.6 points per game and has
helped the Nuggets stay afloat when they were pretty much written off. Nene’s
size and athleticism will go a long way if he can stay healthy and get
acclimated with his new teammates. Gallinari was acquired in the Anthony trade
with the New York Knicks and has great all-around skills. He made 37 percent
of his three-pointers and was third on the team with 14.7 ppg. Al Harrington
could get the start at power forward since Chandler is playing in China.
Harrington posted 10.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game a year ago. Brewer
will most likely be a reserve and could eventually find his way into the
starting lineup if he proves his worth.

BACKCOURT: Miller is one of the more savvy point guards in the game and will
set the offense in motion. Miller has great skill at posting up guards inside
and spent the past two years with Portland. He averaged 12.7 points and 7.0
assists in 81 games last season. Afflalo is a player on the rise and is
expected to be the team’s top shooting guard. Afflalo posted 12.6 points, 3.6
rebounds and 2.4 assists. Lawson could also see time at one of the guard
spots, but is expected to come off of the bench.

BENCH: The Nuggets made some moves in the offseason and most of them were
centered around bench players. Fernandez, Brewer and Chris Anderson should see
plenty of time on the floor despite not being able to crack the starting
lineup. Denver hopes Brewer can revert back to his dominating days of 2009-10,
when he posted career-highs in just about every category, while starting all
82 games. Fernandez was a clutch player in his days with Portland. Forward
Michael Ruffin, who has averaged 1.7 points and 3.9 rebounds in 414 career
games with the Bulls, 76ers, Jazz, Wizards, Bucks and Trail Blazers, and
forward DeMarre Carroll are options down low for Karl’s squad. Center Timofey
Mozgov will get a chance to start at some point this season.

COACHING: Denver seems to be re-tooling at this moment, but many believed that
when Anthony was dealt to the Big Apple. Karl won’t admit it, but he had to be
somewhat pleased with not having to worry about tailoring the offense around
Anthony and his spotty defensive skills. Karl owns 1,036 wins in his coaching
career, 328 of those coming as coach of the Nuggets. He should enjoy working
with Miller, who fits Karl’s philosophy of not being selfish and having the
skill set to play defense. Chauncey Billups is gone and that could hurt the
Nuggets, who played so well when he was on the floor. It’s hard to believe how
well the Nuggets have played despite losing plenty of talent. Who knows what
tricks Karl has up his sleeve for the 2011-12 campaign?

OUTLOOK: The Nuggets are expected to compete with Oklahoma City for the
Northwest Division lead and will look to prove the naysayers wrong once again.
Reaching the playoffs in each of the past eight seasons with or without a
superstar player hasn’t been much of an issue for the Rocky Mountain
hoopsters. This season should be no different despite the fresh faces, but the
additions of Miller, Fernandez, Brewer and re-signing Nene can’t possible put
this team back a step. Don’t forget this could be Gallinari’s breakout year
and Afflalo is on the rise. Stranger things have occurred in this league and
Karl appears to have the answers for any situation. The 2011-12 campaign could
be Karl’s toughest job yet.

Dec 19, 2011 – The 2011-2012 NBA season is almost upon us, and that must mean that it is time for preseason power rankings to come out. We probably already figured out that the Dallas Mavericks are the No. 1 team, and that’s where they are in NBC Sports’ Pro Basketball Rankings. But how about the Denver Nuggets? They are the No. 13 team, which is a decent starting place for the team heading into the season. Here’s the write up for the Nuggets:

13. Nuggets (50-32). They are fielding the best team in China (J.R. Smith, Kenyon Martin and Wilson Chandler are all still there). Keeping Nene was huge for this team.

But here’s the thing, J.R. Smith and Kenyon Martin were unlikely to return to the Nuggets even before they went over to China. Chandler is a restricted free agent whenever he returns and as it stands, the Nuggets might not match any offer for him.

Retaining Nene is certainly a big part of the Nuggets’ offseason remake, but so too would be retaining Arron Afflalo, who is still waiting for a new deal. Trading for Rudy Fernandez and Corey Brewer could turn into a good move — the Nuggets traded only a second-round pick for the two of them.

The real competition the Nuggets will be facing in the Northwest Division is the Oklahoma City Thunder, the No. 4 team in these rankings. A division title does not look to be in the Nuggets’ future.

The Denver Nuggets have re-signed Nene to a five-year deal, keeping the unrestricted free agent through 2015-16.

The Denver Post first reported that the Brazilian center had agreed to the contract that could be worth up to $67 million.

Nene had considered leaving Denver for the Nets, Rockets or Pacers as an unrestricted free agent, but decided in the end to stay in the city where he began his career in 2002. Nene averaged 14.5 points and 7.6 rebounds last season and will be counted upon to provide leadership after Kenyon Martin’s exodus to China during the NBA lockout. Nene will start in the Nuggets frontcourt alongside Timofey Mozgov.

The Nuggets have acquired versatile swingman Rudy Fernandez and forward Corey Brewer from the Dallas Mavericks for a future second-round pick.

Clippers: With Chris Paul’s future in limbo, Blake Griffin weighed in enthusiastically on the possibility of the Clippers landing the All-Star guard. “We’d love to have him,” he said, “but if it doesn’t work out, everybody on this team knows that we’re ready to roll with this team.”

Asked Tuesday if the team was still interested, general manager Neil Olshey said, “If you pick up the phone you’re going to have to listen to what somebody has to say. We are not actively making phone calls trying to acquire any new players at this point.”

Trade: The Minnesota Timberwolves have traded

forward Lazar Hayward to the Oklahoma City Thunder for two conditional second-round draft picks and guard Robert Vaden. The Wolves immediately waived Vaden to clear a roster spot to bring in free agent point guard J.J. Barea.

Lakers: The team said that forward Derrick Caracter will have surgery on a torn meniscus in his left knee. Caracter could be out for two months while recovering from surgery.

Jazz: Officials met with free agent Josh Howard in North Carolina as they look to upgrade at small forward. ESPN first reported the Jazz was meeting with the 6-foot-7 Howard, who is entering his ninth season. The Jazz made adding an athletic shooter its top priority in free agency.

Pistons: Center Ben Wallace was sentenced to a year of probation but avoided jail time on drunken driving and gun possession charges stemming from a September traffic stop in suburban Detroit. Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Shalina Kumar also sentenced Wallace to fines, court costs and 30 hours of community service.

Etc.: Retired NBA point guard Kenny Anderson has been charged in South Florida with leaving the scene of an accident, police said. Anderson, 41, was arrested late Sunday after crashing into two trees and walking away, Miramar police said in a report. He was briefly jailed before posting bond.

DENVER — The Denver Nuggets held a rare Friday night practice for their first post-lockout workout, boosting their roster to 11 players with the signing of first-round pick Kenneth Faried of Morehead State and three other rookies.

Also added to the roster was guard Jordan Hamilton, the 26th overall selection by Portland who was acquired as part of a three-team draft-day trade, and undrafted free-agents Cory Higgins and Julyan Stone.

Higgins played at Colorado and is the son of former NBA player Rod Higgins, who was once coached by Nuggets coach George Karl when they were both with Golden State. Stone is the Texas-El Paso’s career assists leader.

The Nuggets also remain hopeful of re-signing free-agent center Nene and guard Arron Afflalo, a restricted free agent.

Both Nene and Afflalo are drawing considerable interest from other teams, however.

“They’re waiting their deal out,” forward Chris “Birdman” Andersen said. “We’ll see what happens. Hopefully, they’ll be on board with us real soon.”

Karl oversaw a 2 1/2-hour practice at the team’s facility at the Pepsi Center in a first step toward preparing the Nuggets for their lockout-delayed opener Dec. 26 at Dallas.

Given the compressed training camp, Karl said it won’t be possible to have the team fully prepared for the start of the season.

“You’re not going to be ready,” Karl said. “From the standpoint of when the season starts, we’re only going to have maybe 60 percent of what we wanted to get in get in. You’re going to go 15-20 games into the season still trying to get your team (running) a full playbook and a full defensive concept. This is what we got. Everybody has the same timetable. Nobody has anything different.”

Guard Ty Lawson, who spent part of the lockout playing in Lithuania, was just thrilled to be back with his NBA team practicing and getting ready for the season, although a shortened one.

“It felt good,” Lawson said. “I’ve been waiting for this moment for three months. It’s good to be back with my teammates, meeting the rookies and getting to talk to the coaches. I hadn’t done that for a long time. We had a good practice, worked hard and we’re ready to get back at it tomorrow.”

Nene has spent his entire nine-year NBA career playing for the Denver Nuggets, is married to a Colorado native, and plans to retire to the Centennial State when he eventually stops playing pro ball, but none of that is going to help him stick with the team, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Marc J. Spears.

“I learned last season that this was a business,” Nene told Spears. “No matter how nice you are to people, no matter how nice people are to you, this is a business. I did my best for the team and they waited and waited to extend me. I was like, ‘Oh, OK, all these years playing good, doing your best and they still test you.’ That’s not about family, love and somebody liking you. It’s a business.”

According to Spears, before the lockout occurred this summer, the Nuggets offered the 6-11 Brazilian a four-year, $50 million contract extension, which he would have taken during the season but “felt disrespected because the Nuggets waited so long.”

So he’s opting to be a free agent and wants to sign with a team that is likely to contend for a title, Spears notes. And there should be plenty of folks interested in signing the man who averaged 14.5 points, 7.6 rebounds and one blocked shot per game last season.

It’s a business.

And there should be plenty of folks interested in signing the man who averaged 14.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, and one blocked shot per game last season.

Denver won its season opener 129-126 on Thursday night in dramatic fashion, knocking off division rival Portland in a gritty road victory.

What? The Nuggets didn’t play last night?

The NBA, true, remains in a lockout, but that doesn’t mean the games don’t go on, at least in fantasyland.

To get a sense of how the season might have started, I simulated what would have been Thursday’s season opener.

Since all I have is a Sega Genesis (I challenge anyone to a game of NHLPA ’93), I went over to my buddy Nate Kreckman’s home to play NBA 2K12, which we rented for his Xbox 360.

Right away, we were stunned by how realistic the game was, everything from Kenyon Martin’s neck tattoo to Greg Oden looking 89 years old. I played as Portland, while Nate, a local radio host for 102.3 The Ticket, coached the new-look Nuggets.

“I think we lack the superstar presence,” Kreckman said, in reference to a trade that sent Renaldo Balkman to the Knicks. “But it’s all about team basketball or, as George Karl would say, team-ness.”

Nate won the tipoff . . . which proved to be his greatest accomplishment in the first quarter. I got 14 quick points from sharpshooter Wesley “Sniper” Matthews, and, with 7:42 left in the first, Portland led 18-3 — at which point I quoted a Wesley Snipes film, “White Men Can’t Jump,” as I queried Kreckman: “Why don’t we take all these bricks and build a shelter for the homeless?”

Sure enough, as Denver’s Wilson Chandler missed another jumper, Nate deadpanned: “And Chandler is picking up where he left off in the playoffs. . . . “

At one point in the first quarter, I led by 22. Twitter, Facebook and Friendster were surely blowing up by now.

But faster than a Kim Kardashian marriage, Nate brought the Nugs back. Chandler started heating up, NBA Jam style, and as Kreckman would say afterwards: “With Portland, I think there was a certain level of perceived comfort

with the lead. Also, I thought my grasp of the buttons improved tremendously.”

A Ty Lawson 3-pointer cut the lead to 46-43 (with 7:02 left in the half), which seemingly infuriated Raymond Felton, his North Carolina elder yet backup last spring.

Now with Portland, Felton fueled his team toward the half, hitting a 3 with 1.8 seconds left in the second, giving the Trail Blazers a 74-57 lead heading into the locker room.

Here’s a little-known fact about Nuggets coach Karl — in the second half of games, he prefers to have his team defending the basket closest to the Nuggets’ bench. It gives him a better look at his defensive setups. Surely this strategy came into play in the second half, because I stunk. I was missing shots with frightening consistency, and at one point the video-game commentator made reference to my lack of focus. (Full disclosure, during that particular turnover, I was eating a handful of Honey Nut Cheerios).

Meanwhile, the Nuggets’ Danilo Gallinari was making shots from Milan, or, as Nate called it, “Jimmer range.” The Nuggets forward scored 15 points in the third, prompting Kreckman to blurt out, “It’s not so much me as it’s Gallo.”

And when Gallo unleashed a dunk with 7:25 left in the fourth, it brought the Nugs to within 106-105. The game went back and forth in the closing minutes, and when Kenyon Martin dunked while being fouled, Nate screamed something that would probably be spelled: “Yee-aaww-oooo!!!” K-Mart’s free throw gave Denver a 124-121 lead with 1:15 left.

Down six with 11 seconds left, I made a ridiculous strategic blunder, taking a two-pointer with Brandon Roy. There wasn’t enough time for me to get two more possessions, Nate made some free throws and the Nuggets won.

“Good win on the road. Happy to get the season started like that,” Kreckman said in his best Karl-speak afterward. “To be honest though, the video game is so realistic, it was a tight game, crowd noise was getting into it — for the first time during this lockout, I miss the NBA. I’m being dead serious.”

Kenyon Martin is about to join J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler as key Denver Nuggets free agents that have decided to play a season in China rather than see how the lockout plays out.

Kenyon Martin is about to join J.R. Smith and Wilson Chandler as key Denver Nuggets free agents that have decided to play a season in China rather than see how the lockout plays out.

And that leaves the Nuggets screwed for next season.

Martin’s agent Andy Miller confirmed to Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post the planned signing with Xingiang Guanghui in the Chinese Basketball Association. That is the team that also has former NBA player Quincy Douby.

“It’s a great opportunity for him to stay in shape and stay fresh,” said Andy Miller, Martin’s agent. “And it also gives him an opportunity to expand his name globally.”

The Chinese Basketball Association has a rule in place that players cannot have opt-out clauses in their contracts, forcing teams to only target players who were to be free agents. The Nuggets have a lot of those.

This means three key rotation players for the Nuggets are gone for the entire next season (there is the possibility of a handshake deal to cut these guys loose when the lockout ends, but don’t bet on it). It’s not that any of these guys individually is irreplaceable, but as a group they are. The Nuggets looked good at the end of last season because they played very team-oriented ball, with a number of quality players willing to defend and make the extra pass. Now that team is breaking up for at least a season.

Martin, age 34, started the 48 games he was healthy last season and was a key part of the Nuggets play bringing a physical inside presence, even though he averaged just 8.6 points per game. J.R. Smith was a sixth man of the year candidate for the Nuggets providing 12.3 points per game, and Wilson Chandler saw significant minutes and started 19 games for the team after coming over from the Knicks in the Carmelo Anthony trade.

All of them will play next season in China.

Nuggets forward Danilo Gallinari has signed to play in Italy and Ty Lawson will be in Lithuania, but both of them have opt-out contracts to return to the NBA when the league ends.

Read More: Wilson Chandler (G – DEN), Denver Nuggets

Wilson Chandler isn’t the biggest name to sign in Europe with the NBA lockout in place. He’s one of the more established talents to do so, though, considering he’s started 199 of his 254 NBA games thus far in his career.

Chandler, the Denver Nuggets versatile forward, has signed a contract to play with Italy’s Olimpia Milano as the team attempts to get through the first stage of Euroleague competition.

Sportando, the European basketball site that first broke the deal, reports that Chandler will be paid roughly $500,000 for a contract that will last into the middle of December. The two sides will then re-evaluate the situation depending on the progress of the NBA lockout as well as the progress of Chandler’s new European team.

Chandler doesn’t have to return to the NBA at the end of the lockout considering he’s a restricted free agent — the Denver Nuggets have an option worth just over $3 million next season if the team wants to bring him back after acquiring him in a mid-season trade with the Knicks — but the clause included in his contract certainly gives him quite a bit of flexibility.

It’ll be interesting to see if more NBA players go the route of Chandler and decide to sign a couple-month contract in Europe rather than a full-season contract with the NBA-out option.

Gotta run!.

Benjamin Hochman of the Denver Post reports:

The reality of the NBA lockout is hitting home as the Nuggets’ point guard Ty Lawson — one of the team’s top players — said today he has signed to play with a team in Lithuania called Zalgiris Kaunas.

Lawson said agreed Sunday to play for this team, which also features former Nugget teammate Sonny Weems.

“It’s the best situation for me to go out there,” Lawson said by phone. “Being at home, I’m not saying I’m a lazy person, but I want to be in the gym. And plus, it’s a new experience going out to Lithuania, so why not? It was a no-brainer.

“And as soon as the lockout ends, I can come right back and be with the Denver Nuggets.”
